2013 Moutard Cepage Arbane Vielles Vignes Brut - Champagne, France - SAVE 21%
For those looking for a needle in the haystack. Most think of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier as the grape varieties of Champagne. Not true, three others are permitted, but rarely found. This one is made from 100% Arbane. There exists only a few acres in production. It's was all but phased out years ago as not being commercially viable, as the bunches are tiny and so are the berries. It's also open to all sorts of mildew problems. In recent years, all over the world, there has been a renewed interest in bring back once neglected or near extinct grape varieties. Moutard is the champion for Arbane. This is a stunning, full, complex, layered Champagne. It comes across somewhat like Chardonnay, but with an edgier quality. Five years on the lees. Drink it as a starter wine or with any seafood. There's plenty of weight so it can be enjoyed throughout a meal. It should be drank on the day that it's opened, even if you have a good stopper. Total production under 200 cases. Drink now or cellar to 2024.
