2016 Paul Autard Cotes du Rhone - Rhone Valley, France - SAVE 22%
I've been drinking this Cotes du Rhone for more than 30 years. I visited this winery on my first visit to France in the 1980s. I've been a fan from the beginning. This is classic CdR. It's sourced from 50 year old vines from the family property. The vineyard is 30 acres, mostly Grenache, with lesser amounts of Syrah and Mourvedre. For starters, the color is deep and well extracted, the smell and taste has a spicy, slightly peppery note with lots of black fruit. There's plenty of body, but the tannins are kept in check. It's the type of wine that can be drank often, with no risk of tiring of it. Open it and pour, there's no need to let it breathe, but it maintains itself into day two, if you have leftovers. Drink it with most anything from the grill. For the money, it's one of the best values around. Total production 3000 cases. Drink now through 2023.
